Part 2: The First Boxes Are In!

The first boxes from my order are in and I’m feeling a combination of excited, nervous, and intimidated.  The boxes that have come in so far are:

2 x Emperor’s Children Combat Patrol

3 x Chaos Rhinos

2 x Noise Marines

2 x Lord Kakophonist

1 x Lord Exultant

1 x Infractors / Tormentors

3 x Daemon Princes

This week, I focused on building and priming the models, as I live in a northern climate where it is starting to get colder, which impacts my ability to prime models.  The goal is get everything built and primed Chaos Black before it gets too cold.  I’ve found that the best way for me to work through this is to work in batches and built the kits in sets of 3.  What I mean by this is that I unpacked all 3 Rhinos or all 3 Daemon Princes and then worked through the instructions with all 3 kits at the same time.  This allowed me to learn how the parts are intended to go together much quicker and greatly sped up the process for me.  I’m still working through it, but at the bottom of the post are some pictures of my Work In Process.

I also have spent some time researching my color choices, with some help from Steve.  I’m sure it will change as I get into it, but for now I am thinking for using the below as my primary colors.

Armor Color:

Base = Kakophoni Purple

Shade = Rageshade Targor or Druchi Violet

Highlight = Emperor’s Children

Capes and Fabrics:

Base = Sybarite Green

Shade = Nuln Oil

Weapons:

Base = Leadbelcher

Layer (blades only) = Asurmen Blue Contrast

Shade = Nuln Oil

Highlights = Runefang Steel

Trim:

Base = Glittering Gold (Army Painter)

Shade = Agrax Earthshade

Flesh:

Base = White Scar

Shade = Nuln Oil

Additional Shades = Reikland Fleshshade, Drakenhof Nightshade, and/or Druchi Violet

Going forward, I think these posts will shift to focus on 1 unit type at a time as I really liked how I built them in batches of 3 and anticipate doing the same with painting.  I probably will be starting with the Daemon Princes as they are the largest models that I have to date and feel the most like what I am comfortable painting.  I’ll then expand into the Tormentors, Infractors, and Lord Exultant.  The Rhinos will probably have to wait until I can enlist Steve for some airbrush support.  Most importantly, I want to save the Noise Marines, Lucius, Flawless Blades, and Fulcrum until last as they are my favorite models.  Hopefully by then I have developed my process and skills to the point where I can do them justice.

Thanks for humoring me in the build up.  Next up is more building and the start of painting.
