GK Sanctic Spearhead vs EC Mercurial Host

MATCHUP:

Faction: Grey Knights

Detachment: Sanctic Spearhead

VS

Faction: Emperor’s Children

Detachment: The Mercurial Host

MISSION:

Primary: Purge the Foe

Terrain:  GW Terrain Layout 6

Twist: None

Result:

90 – 90 DRAW

OVERALL TAKEAWAYS

  • Overall game
    • EC went up early due to good secondary draws and Advance & Charge abilities
    • GK initially felt overwhelmed but Challenger cards plus timely 4+ invulnerable saves kept them in the game
    • The game felt very even and came down to GK making invulnerable saves on a NDK to avoid EC getting a “Kill More” 4 points for primary.
  • EC
    • Reroll Advance rolls detachment rule is sneaky good as it really powers up your army rule by making it more predictable
    • Mercurial Host is a VERY CP hungry detachment as several stratagems are very good
      • Dark Vigour for Reactive Move of 6 inches
      • Cruel Raiders for “uppy downy” movements between turns
      • Capricious Reactions for -1 to Hit against ranged
    • While very predictable on where he can and can’t move due to his base size, Fulgrim is a fantastic Distraction Carnifex if you are willing to sacrifice his points early.  He died early, but took 2 NDK’s and a 1.5 GK Shooting phases with him.
    • Even when they’re not optimized, EC are FUN!
  • GK
    • 6 NDK’s didn’t feel as overpowering as I would have expected.  EC was able to melee lock a few NDK’s in combat a few times and then pin them their with Capricious Reactions, which makes GMNDK Hammers hitting on 4+ feel really bad.
    • Detachment rule felt like a bit of a non-bo with the army rule.  I didn’t actually “uppy downy” anything until turn 3.
    • Stratagems are good on paper but I ended up using very few of them outside:
      • Abominus Class Targets vs Fulgrim
      • Redoubled Assault when EC tied up the GMNDK’s
      • Armored Aegis to heal 3 wounds on a NDK, although on I got to use this once as NDK’s tended to either be at full health or gone.
    • Surprisingly, the Razorback’s were the MVP’s of the game as they helped remove anything that could kill a NDK and then sat on 2 objectives scoring primary for me.

WHAT I WOULD CHANGE NEXT TIME:

  • EC:
    • Play my Winged Damon Prince more strategically.  I Rapid Ingress’d him on turn 2 thinking that I could force GK to choose between killing him and Fulgrim.  Instead, NDK’s rolled hot and both went down Round 2, which massively limited EC’s ability to kill NDK’s for the rest of the game.
  • GK
    • Deploy way less aggressively.  There’s a big difference between knowing EC are fast vs seeing Fulgrim move 19 inches, charge 5 inches, and then kill 2 NDK’s by the middle of Round 2.
